MEP Geo’s design for this district energy system provides capacity for 12 million SF of mixed-use development, using geothermal technology, river-source cooling, wastewater heat recovery, thermal storage, and simultaneous heating/cooling exchange to provide thermal utilities. Additionally the system is sized to provide sustainable infrastructure to the surrounding neighborhood, including Queensbridge Houses.
The central strategies and technologies involved are already functioning nearby, providing highly efficient, highly reliable, extremely low carbon heating and cooling on the Cornell Tech campus on Roosevelt Island. As part of a comprehensive energy platform, this is a feasible model to deploy throughout the five boroughs.
